The Hartley’s Undersea Walk, a memorable experience since 1958. In 2006 we retired the 57ft Pied Piper, which was my home, and dive boat since 1983. One reason was a proposed golf course, which was to encompass the entire bay where we dove since 1958. Although the land fill would not bury the reef, with the rest of the bay, I estimated the project would put us out of business. The environmental impact would be devastating, to the marine life in my opinion. The good news is after the announcement, the project was a go, it was put on hold. In 2010 I modified my cigarette boat (which was built to explore the outer Islands and reefs of the Bahamas) to make it capable to take guests helmet diving again. This required the removal of one engine to make a platform suitable for a double ladder. Now I can offer what my father did in 1948, a more personal dive two at a time, instead of 6 at a time, with as much as 30 on the boat. Now just 4 on the boat. We have a number of reefs locations besides our old one (as long as the golf course does not go forward).
